Australia’s iconic Golden Gaytime ice cream could be forced to change its name after being slammed by the LGBT community as ‘offensive’ and ‘outdated’.
But it seems, not everyone agrees with the decision to rename the 62-year-old brand.
The hosts of Seven’s breakfast show Sunrise and Nine’s Today show have slammed the decision.

Seven sports reporter Mark Beretta told his colleagues: ‘As one of Australia’s biggest consumers of the Golden Gaytime I feel qualified to speak on this.’
‘It’s time to stop this silliness now. This is just not right. It’s a magnificent ice cream, it’s a great name, it always has been, it’s almost iconic Australian,’ he added.
‘You can’t change it, just let it be. Where does this stop now? If you keep changing things, where does it stop? How far down the road do we go?’
7News fiance editor Gemma Acton agreed, saying: ‘I don’t think it’s necessary… it’s supposed to evoke that old Australia. It’s the brand.’

‘It isn’t offensive, it’s in no way derogatory. It’s an accepted term that is embraced by the homosexual community.’
Today show host Karl Stefanovic also agreed it wasn’t necessary to change the name of the iconic Australian ice cream.
‘I say, no, no, no. It’s time to stop this cancel culture. For goodness’ sake, I’m drawing the line at an ice cream. Like millions of Australians I love a Gaytime,’ he told viewers.
‘How can a name born in the innocence of the 1950s be offensive? It’s ridiculous.’

It’s comes after a Melbourne man launched a petition to replace the name of the 62-year-old treat, prompting a heated battle with owner Streets.
‘As a part of the LGBTQIA+ community I believe my sexual identity is owned by me, not a brand and that the outdated meaning no longer applies. Isn’t it time for this double entendre to end?’ he wrote on the online petition, which has garnered over 1000 signatures.
‘Under the law they are seen the same, discrimination means being treated unfairly or not as well as others because of a protected characteristic like age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, race or disability.
‘It’s not my place to tell Streets what to call their re-branded product, but I do feel it’s time that the Golden Gaytime is called out for being outdated, especially when Streets is releasing new products and cross promotions in 2021.

‘Just to be a gay man, even in 2021 is still hard … (we) still have a long way to go to be fully accepted as equals, but if we see an area in life that’s not equal, and we are able to change it for the better, why wouldn’t you speak up?’
The ice cream giant issued a statement saying that the first Streets Gaytime was released in Australia in 1959 ‘when the word ‘gay’ had not yet been applied to sexual preference.
The petition comes months after Allen’s changed the names of its classic Red Skins and Chicos lollies following public backlash.
Red Skins are now known as Red Rippers while Chicos have become Cheekies.
Coon cheese also changed its name to Cheer, despite it being named after the surname of the man who invented part of the cheese-making process.
