Petition: The Veronicas’ Untouched to be the new national anthem

Fans petition for The Veronicas’ hit single Untouched to replace Advance Australia Fair as the national anthem – but the pop twins say they know nothing about the campaign

It seems The Veronicas have some devoted fans.

A new petition has emerged calling for the duo’s 2007 hit single Untouched to become the new Australian national anthem.

The Change.org petition argues Untouched is a perfect replacement for Advance Australia Fair, but so far has only gained 10 signatures.

The person who launched the campaign incorrectly referred to the existing anthem as ‘Advanced Australia Fair’, and argued that Untouched would be more appropriate given Australia has a ‘rave-like culture’.

‘This anthem has very little rhythm and is only to be sung respectfully,’ they said of Advance Australia Fair.

‘This form of singing is incredibly outdated and doesn’t represent Australia’s rave-like culture.’

‘I have proposed a much greater song that represents Australia in a better way, that everyone likes and is inclusive to all Australians, as well as making other countries jealous of our incredible national anthem.’

They continued: ‘Not only does it represent Australia’s hard-partying style, it was written by two people who were born in Australia, automatically making it a much more fitting anthem.’

Advance Australia Fair was written by Scottish-born composer Peter Dodds McCormick. By contrast, Jessica and Lisa Origliasso of The Veronicas were born in Albany Creek, Queensland.

Surprised but loving it: When asked about the petition on Hit Queensland 's Cliffo and Gabi this week, twins Jessica and Lisa, 36, said they had no idea it even existed

‘We didn’t even hear about it so you have to get the word out there babe,’ Lisa laughed.

Jessica added: ‘We can give it a signal boost for sure. Someone needs to send it to us!’
