Nike & Converse Present 2020 Black History Month Collection

Nike and Converse have unveiled a Black History Month collection for 2020. Made up of new takes on the Air Force 1, Air Max 95, Chuck Taylor and Pro Leather, the collection aims to acknowledge a community’s stories with products united by a “common thread,” namely bright colors and bold detailing.

Half of the collection’s offerings are provided by Nike Sportswear, thanks to intricately detailed iterations of the AF1 and AM95. Each features richly colored accents that range from vibrant reds and oranges to cool blues and teals. Apart from the vivid hues, both proffer signature details. These are established on the Air Force 1 via loose threads dangling from the Swoosh for a customizable look, plus a minimal lacing system with only two eyestays on each side and a lace keeper in the center — a style akin to the one seen on Samuel Ross‘s A-COLD-WALL* Air Force 1s from 2018.

The Air Max 95 uses materials from mesh to rugged textured fabric on its human anatomy-inspired side panels. It also comes with detachable lace shrouds and a marker for a personalization element. Each style is united by tear-away detailing, which is present on the toebox of the Air Force 1 and the toe/heel of the Air Max 95. Apart from offering a look that changes and evolves with wear, this is meant as a reminder that richer, deeper stories often lie just under the surface.

Meanwhile, Converse’s duo of classic styles present their inspirations in a different fashion. The Chuck Taylor weaves a rich tapestry full of divergent colors and materials, including green and tan canvas, yellow suede and blue/black leathers, all brought together by burgundy laces and a metallic silver Converse star graphic.

On the other hand, the Pro Leather — a silhouette most commonly associated with the great Julius “Dr. J” Erving — presents a more monochromatic look. This is achieved by mixing various olive green panels on the upper for a patchwork-style ethos that’s brought together by purple laces and metallic silver heel pieces.

The Nike and Converse BHM collection will debut on Nike SNKRS come February 19, with prices ranging from $75-$180 USD.
